No More Delays In Supply Of Braille Textbooks To Visually Impaired

NO MORE DELAYS IN SUPPLY OF BRAILLE TEXTBOOKS TO VISUALLY IMPAIRED
–    AS FIRST LADY RENOVATES AND EQUIPS BRAILLE PRODUCTION CENTRE

The timely intervention of the First Lady of the Republic, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has brought to an end the usual delays in the supply of braille textbooks and other learning materials for the visually impaired.

The inadequate supply of braille textbooks that has plagued the teaching and learning of persons with visual impairments, has been caused by the lack of equipment at the Braille Production Centre.

It is in response to this that the First Lady, acting in her capacity as the Patron of the School for the Blind in Akropong Akwapim has moved to renovated and fully equip the structure and replace outdated and faulty equipments at the Production Centre.

Executed under the Special Projects Initiative by the Rebecca Foundation, the Project which was also supported by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, the project is in line with the Foundation’s strategic initiative to improve in a sustainable manner, inclusion and access to quality education for all school going kids in children in Ghana.

Operations Director of the Rebecca Foundation, Mrs. Akosua Newman, on behalf of the foundation called for judicious use of the facility so as to maximise the opportunities it holds for the visually impaired.

The Centre is jointly supervised by the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service Special Education Unit and other non for profit organizations that are currently working to improve education for persons with visual and other reading and writing impairments.

The Project, estimated at about GHS 145,000, will increase access to braille books which will provide a critical advantage for students to learn grammar, language, math, and science.

Braille is an extremely important tool for visually impaired people to become literate and a critical component that supports educational advancement and increases employment prospects.
